Sue Elder
Certified Veterinary Technician
Veterinary Technician Specialist (Dentistry)
Sue got an early start in veterinary medicine by accompanying her dad, a veterinarian in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, on farm calls at the age of seven. Sue loved to play with the roosters and help her dad treat horses, baby pigs, and other farm animals. “I knew from that first visit I would work with animals in some capacity,” Sue says.
Sue graduated from Parkland Community College with an Associate Degree in Agricultural Science and then studied agricultural science at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. While at the U of I, Sue had the opportunity to get hands-on training with a wide variety of large and small animals.
Shifting gears in her studies, Sue was quick to hop aboard when Parkland became one of the first schools in the nation to offer a program in Veterinary Technology, receiving her degree in 1988. |
Sue is a licensed Veterinary Technician in Illinois and Oregon, where she moved shortly after graduation. Before joining the Animal Dental Clinic, she worked in a number of veterinary clinics and hospitals in the Portland area, developing a growing interest in animal dentistry as a result of conferences and lectures she attended.“
I heard about Dr. Brannan coming to Portland, and although she didn’t need a full-time veterinary technician at the time, I really wanted the chance to work with her to learn more about animal dentistry.” Sue got her wish; she started working with Dr. Brannan in the Animal Dental Clinic in 1994. “I love being able to add value to a veterinary practice and Dr. Brannan gives me that opportunity. I really appreciate her approach to veterinary medicine.”
Sue loves what she does. “I try to be the best veterinary technician I can be. I want to do the best I can for my doctor, my team and the animals we serve.” She is a member of the American Society of Veterinary Dental Technicians and a charter member of the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians.
Sue lives in Portland with her husband Steve, their dog Bogey, and two cats, Mario Le Mew and Ghostman (famous for his disappearing act).

Human and veterinary dentistry are very similar, so the skills I'm learning are transferable.”

Anders Garlid
IT Specialist & Veterinary Assistant
As a full-time student, Anders is learning the challenges of balancing work and study. Prior to the Animal Dental Clinic, his work experience includes stints with an event production company and in food service.Anders grew up with dogs and cats, so caring for them comes easily to him – but the Animal Dental Clinic is the first time he's had the chance to work with them. “I'm good with animals; they seem to respond to me,” he says. “When they arrive, my goal is to approach them in a way that makes them comfortable, to help them feel secure so they're not nervous.”
“I'm learning about the (veterinary dental) business. There's much more to it than it appears,” he says. And for Anders, “learning” seems to be the operable word. He is a senior at Portland State University, where he's earning a dual-major – Philosophy and Biochemistry. This particular combination of studies allows Anders to expand his mind using philosophical methods of inquiry and then apply that inquiry into the core of living organisms. “It allows me a perspective that leads me to understand things I might not have otherwise. I really like that.”
|
Anders' job description at the clinic has changed in the past year. He's moved from client support to maintaining the clinic's computer requirements. Additionally he's working in research at Portland State University in the department of biology. The more diverse the duties, the better it seems to suit Anders.
Some of Anders favorite things include music, his cat and dog, his friends, biking, snowboarding, architecture, math, and science.
